My wife just got home from a work trip and asked me if we had any plans this weekend. I said yes, I was going to go to the Houston Auto Show on Saturday (and invite H-Town Oppos/Jalops to join me). She told me that I couldn’t go and had to go with her to this event instead (answer is worth the jump):

So, apparently, my wife has secretly scheduled a trip to Scottsdale, AZ for us to attend the BARRETT-GOD DAMNED-JACKSON AUTO AUCTION HELL YEAH AAAAAHHHHH!!!! I’ll be drooling all over some of the coolest cars in the HISTORY OF MANKIND (being sold at price points well out of our reach) AAAAAAAHHHH!!!

She was actually worried for a second that I would be upset that I couldn’t attend Houston’s pitiful excuse of an automotive event. Compared to NAIAS, it’s like walking around looking at rust buckets at Sammy’s Used Car Emporium and Hair Care Center.

I went to Mecum a couple of years ago here in Houston. There was a 1995 F-150 single cab 4x4 with a 5.0 that I was halfway interested in for $10k. It then quickly sold for $30k (JIP!!) and I instead wandered the floor either ogling at the beautiful cars or laughing at the shitty ones that had opening bids of $50k AND reserves.

It was a fun event, and I expect this one to be batshit.

There was an auction at COTA in November that had some cool stuff. There were a couple of very nice BMW Isettas that weren’t completely unreasonable. There was also a nice looking Nash Metropolitan that I briefly considered for Mrs. Shoe Pilot because she loves the way they look. Of course, once you left the realm of “sort of affordable” and got up into “stupid money” the stuff was even cooler. The 80's kid in me really really really wanted the CHERRY Countach.

That’s what they do where my dad works. He’s the shop manager at a place that says “we can get anyone financing”, even if it means making $50 payments every two weeks on a $800 car.

They had a couple come in that wanted to finance a 2000 Mercury Grand Marquis that was priced at $5500. The outside credit folks said they could do it at 22% for 4 years. They took it. 22% FOR FOUR YEARS ON A 2000 GRAND-MAR!

I’m glad my dad fixes cars there because if he was selling them I’d have to be morally outraged.
